Theme License and Transfer
According to Shopify’s Terms of Service, Section 9.4, you must have a valid license to use our theme in your store. The only way to obtain a valid license is by purchasing the theme directly from the official Shopify Theme Store.
One License, One Store
A single theme license is valid for one Shopify store only.
For example, if you purchased the theme for my-first-store.myshopify.com, it may only be used on that store.
You may only use the theme on a different store after officially transferring the license—a process governed by Shopify.
Scenario does not offer refunds, discounts, or bulk theme purchases. All theme sales and licensing are managed exclusively by Shopify.
How to Check Your License
If you purchased the theme from the Shopify Theme Store, you likely have a valid license. To confirm:
- Contact Shopify Support and ask them to verify your license, or
- Reach out to our support team with your store URL.
What If My Store Doesn’t Have a Valid License?
If you obtained the theme from any source other than the Shopify Theme Store, your store is likely using an unauthorized (unlicensed) copy.
Consequences include:
- ❌ No access to support or theme updates
- ⚠️ Risk of legal action: We reserve the right to report your store to Shopify’s legal team and file a DMCA takedown notice, which could result in your store being suspended.
✅ To avoid disruption, please either:
- Purchase the theme from the Shopify Theme Store, or
- Completely remove our theme from your store.
Can I Import the Theme from Another Store?
You may only import the theme into another store if that store has its own valid license purchased from the Shopify Theme Store.
Simply copying or transferring theme files between stores without a license violates Shopify’s Terms of Service.
What If I Operate Multiple Markets?
-
✅ Same Shopify store, multiple markets (e.g., US and EU storefronts under one admin):
→ Only one license is required. -
❌ Separate Shopify stores for each market:
→ You must purchase one license per store.
Agencies and Development Stores
If you’re an agency building stores for clients, you may use a password-protected development store to test and customize the theme—at no extra cost—provided that:
- The development store does not accept real payments
- The store is not publicly accessible (i.e., password-protected)
Important Notes for Agencies:
- The theme must be purchased on the live (production) store, not the development store.
- When contacting our support team about a development store, always include the URL of the licensed (live) store in your message. This helps us verify your license quickly.
How to Transfer a License
License transfers are handled exclusively by Shopify. To transfer a theme license from one store to another:
- Contact Shopify Support directly for instructions.
- Be aware that Shopify typically requires the original store to be fully closed before a license can be transferred.
❗ As of now, Shopify does not allow license transfers while keeping the original store active. If you still need to operate the original store, a transfer is not possible—and you’ll need to purchase a new license for the second store.
For any licensing questions, please contact Shopify Support or our support team with your licensed store URL.
